Project Overview

MTM Enterprises partnered with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to execute a critical log jam removal project beneath the Route 360 Bridge. The site was severely obstructed by accumulated wood debris, posing risks to water flow, flood safety, and bridge stability.

MTM’s objective was to remove these obstructions efficiently while preserving the integrity of the surrounding ecosystem and infrastructure. The project demanded a precise, low-impact approach due to the confined waterway, active traffic on the bridge, and environmental sensitivity of the area.

By deploying a combination of custom equipment and proven field techniques, MTM completed the project on time and ahead of industry benchmarks, reinforcing our role as a trusted partner in infrastructure and environmental contracting.

Technical Implementation

To execute the Route 360 log jam removal efficiently and safely, MTM Enterprises deployed a combination of custom-engineered equipment and strategic field methods tailored to the complexity of the site. A 60+ foot long-reach excavator enabled safe, controlled debris extraction from hard-to-reach areas beneath the bridge without requiring work on the bridge deck itself. This approach minimized structural risk and maintained full roadway access.

Additional equipment included hydraulic thumb attachments for secure handling of large logs, dozer winch systems capable of exerting 30,000–40,000 lbs of pulling force, and polyethylene safety rope—chosen over steel cable to reduce risk of snapback injuries. To support on-water operations, a compact, custom-designed "baby barge" provided a stable platform for barge crews to assist with floating debris removal and shallow water work. Weight distribution on land was managed using tuna mats, which protected the ground and bridge approach during heavy equipment use. Throughout the project, erosion control measures and species protection practices ensured full environmental compliance.

Project Results

The Route 360 log jam removal project was completed successfully and ahead of schedule, with MTM Enterprises clearing all obstructive debris beneath the bridge in under four weeks—well below typical industry timelines. This effort restored full water flow through the channel, significantly reduced flood risk, and alleviated pressure on the bridge structure. Throughout the project, MTM maintained strict compliance with environmental regulations, implementing erosion control, species protection, and water quality safeguards. A full set of high-resolution photo and video documentation was provided to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), reinforcing transparency and project accountability. The successful outcome not only ensured long-term structural and ecological stability at the site but also strengthened MTM’s relationship with VDOT, highlighting our capability to deliver fast, safe, and environmentally responsible infrastructure solutions.
